Character Word of the Month -

Beginning in November the Chamber is partnering with the Waynesville School District in promoting their character word of the month. Each month a character word is chosen to be the focus of character development. The Chamber is encouraging its members to apply this word within their business each month. Businesses can put up a sign or put the word on their marquis as well as encourage employees to focus on what the character word means to them.

The character word for December is:

Love/Caring means to be concerned or solicitous; have thought or regard; to be concerned or have a special preference; to make provision or look out; to have an inclination, liking, fondness, or affection; to feel concern about; or to wish, desire, like.

What does love/caring mean to you, your business, and the community?

Chamber Business Showcase

On the 30th of November the Chamber Surprise Patrol visited two Chamber member businesses to recognize them as the Chamber new Business Showcase member recognition program recipients for December. The December Business Showcase recipients are Beasley's Heating and Cooling and Cable America. The Surprise Patrol visited both businesses and dropped off a special sign that will be displayed throughout the month. Business Showcase recipients are drawn each month. The Surprise Patrol will be out again in January to recognize the next recipients.

Meet Your Chamber Board

Board member, Carey Heitman has worked with State Farm Insurance Companies since 1999 and has run his own State Farm office since 2004. His favorite thing about the Chamber is the social events and lunches. Carey thinks they are, "a great time to meet with new and existing business associates. I find it extremely beneficial to find out what is going on in their world as well as how the local economy is influencing our community." Something you might not know about Carey is that along with his State Farm office, he also runs a farm just east of town.

Greetings everybody! The end of the year is upon us and as we all start getting ready for the Holidays and Christmas, let us all be in the true meaning of Christmas. We are very fortunate to live in a community with so many wonderful people. The many expressions of kindness that are shown throughout the year by so many, truly tells by our actions of what a caring and giving community that we have. Please remember our military serving away from home to protect our freedoms. They are the very reason that when we go to sleep at night, we do so worry free.

As we start the shopping season for Christmas, please remember your local businesses and retailers. For every One Dollar $1.00 spent locally; sixty-three cents ($.63) of that dollar stays in our Community. Buying over the internet, while convenient, really does very little for our community. For many of our local businesses, the Christmas retail sales season can make or break the business for the year. So before you go shopping out of town or on the internet, think local, our local businesses are the ones that support our community activities and our cities/county sales tax revenues.

I hope all of you have wonderful Christmas and God Bless each of you.

Your Pres.,

Mike Dunbar

President's Message

Shawn Cordry

As we head to the last month of the year, and the end of my presidency for the Ambassadors of the Chamber of Commerce, I look around at all these great volunteers in our organization. I ask you to look at the faces of those blue coats at the next Chamber function and remember them. For they will be your future leaders in this community. To be a leader it takes time, initiative, dedication, selfless acts of kindness, endurance and sacrifice. All which I have seen from the faces wearing those blue coats. They have become my friends and like family to me. And I am appreciative for each of them and thank them for their commitment to our community.

I also would like to Thank Cecilia and her staff Jena and Leanna. They do an phenomenal job for a small staff and put out such large projects successfully. Shake their hands and say thank you or better yet give them a big hug. Enjoy the holidays and appreciate all those God has graced to be in your life.

The end of 2012 is getting closer and everyone is interested if we "fall off the cliff"! The political football of raising taxes and raising revenues is being debated in Washington DC. Municipalities fund their budgets through a variety of revenue sources including sales tax, property tax, local income tax, excise tax, fees, licenses and revenue from providing services such as trash collection. No one wants to raise taxes. Everyone wants job creation and job growth. The shortest path to creating jobs in any community is by helping local businesses and entrepreneurs. Every community has entrepreneurs that have the motivation, potential, and desire. The Pulaski County Growth has supported the Entrepreneurs Club this past year and will continue to do so in 2013. Study after study has shown the "multiplier effect" of job creation on community revenue growth. Each new job has a positive impact on the community's tax revenues, fees, and service revenue. The State of Missouri has an "IDEA Program ". The State has funds that promote the formation and growth of businesses that engage in the transfer of science and technology. There are four funds that maybe utilized: Tech Launch, Seed Capital Co-Investment, Venture Capital, and High Tech Industrial Expansion. I am a board member of the Meramec Regional Development Corporation. This board makes decisions on SBA 504 Loans, and they have a revolving loan fund that may provide gap financing. At our E-Club meetings we have mentors that have experience and contacts and are very willingly to help. I encourage anyone wanting to start a new business or expand your business to attend an E-Club meeting or contact me at director@pulaskicountymo.com or 573-336-2123.

NOTES FROM THE ROUBIDOUX

Dear Citizens:

Our City Council agenda was somewhat light this month. I nominated Michael Curtis from Ward 4 to take the seat of the late Tim Bartlett. His nomination was approved unanimously. I look forward to working with Mike. We had several routine items to deal with on the agenda. Remember that the City operates on a Committee System. Our business comes through different committees for discussion and ideas, and then moves to the Council. If it appears that we quickly pass items on the agenda without discussion, that couldn't be further from the truth. We have already had those discussions and asked questions before the Council meeting. If you have questions or issues, the appropriate committee is where to start. They are listed on our website, at www.waynesvillemo.org.

The Park Board announced the building of a new pavilion in the eastern section of the Roubidoux Park. Also, the Board is announcing the formation of an "Adopt a Spot" program to keep our parks and downtown area clean. There will be five locations offered for adoption for a two year period. These assignments will be given on a first come, first serve basis and will have their names placed on a sign in the area. Please contact me at 774-6171, if you would like to be on the list. We are looking for community groups, churches and even families to take on a regular pick up process. Let us know if you are interested.

We accepted the resignation of long-time Planning and Zoning Commission member, Joe Rapone, this month. We thanked him for his service and interest in the City. The Council approved the appointments of Twyla Cordry and Cecil Davis to the Commission. Our Boards and Commissions are full at this time, but if you would like to be considered for any position, please call me and I will make a note of your willingness to serve.

The "talk of the town" this month has been the B and B Cinema's announcement of the groundbreaking on their Waynesville Patriot 12 Cinema, to be located on G. W. Lane Street, on the newly platted Patriot Landing North. We are excited to have this new facility in west Waynesville and look forward to working with the Bagby family. The Ozarks Technical College has also brought up their building, along side the VA Clinic. The other topic of conversation is the beginning of our sidewalk project near the Waynesville Middle School. This is the first phase of a Safe Routes to School Grant from MoDOT. It will run from Westside Baptist to Anytime Fitness. We have applied for the second phase, which will run from Casey's to Ichord Ave and the BP Station. It is our goal to have a walkable community. The community is also proud of Vino Alan, or Brett Alvino, as many of us know him. His success on The X Factor has been phenomenal and we are very proud of him.

Other information is available on our monthly newsletter and our newly designed website. "Like" us on Facebook for regular announcements.
We hope you had a great Thanksgiving holiday with your family and friends.

REMEMBER TO SHOP LOCAL FOR THE HOLIDAYS! Support your neighbors and local projects through your sales tax.

Dates to Remember:
December 2: Lions' Club Community Christmas Parade, 2:00 p.m.
December 6: Waynesville's Annual Christmas on the Square, sponsored this year by the Waynesville Downtown Business Association
