There has been a movement to make economic development a more regional approach for about 15 years. This really came about as we began to talk about the "Global Economy." This discussion was started because our manufacturing jobs starting exiting the United States. It now appears that some manufacturing is returning to the United States. I recently have read several reports of companies finding it is now more profitable to manufacture in the United States. Since April 1, I have received 6 requests for RFP's from the Missouri Partnership in regard to manufacturing projects. All projects requested existing buildings. Pulaski County has a shortage of existing buildings, or should I say we have none suitable for manufacturing available. We will be addressing that issue and see if more buildings can be available to attract manufacturing jobs. Now, getting back to the regional approach. I have been involved for over a year with the formation of the TECH 44 " The Ideas Highway" organization. This group has participation from St. Louis to Joplin. The Fort Leonard Wood Region is in a very good position being in the middle of the corridor. We now have a dues structure and committees in place. I am on the Marketing & Branding Committee.

We have the following objectives:
-Develop a plan for establishing the brand and marketing the region.
-Establish a plan for recognizing"centers of excellence" that are found within the corridor.
-Design and create all marketing materials.
-Celebrate the success of existing advanced technology companies within the corridor.

Other committees are Stakeholder Engagement Committee, and Education & Research Committee. Mark Premont representing Fort Leonard Wood, and Ron Selfors representing SOP, serve on the Education & Research Committee. This regional organization will help our continued efforts to bring new investment and jobs to the Fort Leonard Wood Region.

NOTES FROM THE ROUBIDOUX

Dear Citizens:

It has been a busy three weeks of becoming acclimated to the office of Mayor of Waynesville. I have hit the road running and we are busy working on several initiatives. A special Council meeting on May 7 focused on discussing short and long term goals for the City. Input from our staff, as well as the Council and myself, gave us a working plan for improving the City in many different ways. These can be found on our Facebook page and shortly, on our newly designed City web page.

My first goal as mayor is to improve our communication with the community and our citizens. We hope to launch our new City web site in the next month. We have an active Facebook page at "City of Waynesville MO" and have now published our second monthly newsletter. The newsletters are mailed in utility bills and are also online. I have also been interviewed by radio media several times and always have a presence at Chamber of Commerce functions and the Committee of Fifty award luncheons. If you have need of a City representative, give us a call and we will try our best to be there.

Plans are moving forward on the Waynesville Industrial Park, located to the south of I-44 in West Waynesville. Our plans and designs were approved by the City Council on May 17th. We plan for approximately 17 lots of varying acreage to offer for industrial development, as we work to improve job opportunities in our area. We also plan a Public Works Building, a water tower and a fire station. We see this as a long term investment in the City and our citizens.

We also are working with the Phelps County Regional Medical Center, as they prepare plans for a 53,000 sq. ft. clinic to be located beside the VA Clinic on G. W. Lane Street. They have presented impressive plans and I believe the citizens will be proud of this new addition and investment in Waynesville. We await the actual groundbreaking of the new OTC campus at that location.

I met recently with MoDOT concerning several issues in the City. From congestion on T Highway and the Good Samaritan area, to a safer crosswalk downtown, the officials were receptive and as always, professional in their dealing with the City. Some improvements have already been addressed and they have come to us with some suggestions for a long term plan concerning our congestion issues. We will keep you posted. They have also suggested some repair techniques on the Roubidoux Bridge curbing and we will be working on that shortly to see if it gives us a good result. Overall, we are very happy with the response, bearing in mind that budget cuts are hurting all state agencies.

In the next few months, we will be planning and purchasing some new banners for the City light poles. Thanks to a citizen committee (Ursula, Pam and Janet) for their input as we try to "dress up" Waynesville.

Happy 10 year anniversary to Seda's Gift Shoppe and the Odyssey Scuba, two of our excellent businesses on the Square. New businesses opening recently in Waynesvillle are the Pamper Me Beautiful Spa, Express Stop Convenience Store and the Extreme Clean Car Wash. We thank all these businesses for their investment in Waynesville. Please Shop Local!

Remember the Summer Jam on the Square May 26th, Gospel Singing June 15th at the WHS, County Fair June 13-16, Freedom Fest on the Square June 16 and Cave State Cruisers' Car Show June 23-24 in the Roubidoux Park.

Mayor of Waynesville
